Humpback whale spotting in Sydney

After issues changing the date for my voucher with Groupon, my first experience with Go Whale Watching was their fantastic customer service. They transferred my voucher to another day for me and made my booking within 24 hours of contacting them. The lady I contacted was really friendly and helpful in accomodating my request. The email confirmation I received gave me the port number and time to meet at Darling Harbour – all detailed and clear information. Travelling by myself, while these factors may seem trivial, these were aspects which made the tour more enjoyable and are a big part of why I would recommend Go Whale Watching – especially for other solo travellers.

The trip itself was around 2 and a half hours, including around 45 minutes with the humpback whales! The ride out to sea take a you under the Harbour Bridge and past the Opera House which is a great photo opportunity. Reaching the opening to the sea, you are also treated to views of dramatic cliff faces on both sides. The sea wasn’t too choppy on our trip and I didn’t struggle with seasickness despite usually being affected and having had a few drinks the previous night! Saying that, I opted to sit on the lower back half of the boat for preventative measures and if this is something you are sensitive to I would recommend sea sickness tablets. Staff do check on people and are super approachable should you have any issues.

The whales are honestly incredible, we saw three on our trip although in August it was an awkward time between their northern and southern migration. We were treated to one jump from a whale too which was a bonus! They are easy to miss so the best thing you can do is keep your eyes on the water and be patient. Another bonus of Go Whale Watching is that they provide free photos taken on the trip by a professional photographer- available on their Facebook page. Other companies did offer this for a charge so I was pleasantly surprised by this on the day, especially as I had not managed to capture a picture of the whale jumping. I have included these pictures in this post. Before departing back to the harbour, cake was provided as afternoon tea which was a nice touch.

Overall, I would recommend Go Whale Watching as a company to use if wanting to spot humpback whales whilst in Sydney! It’s best to time the season to see more whales but the customer service and experience could not be faulted.
